To the right you will see the beautiful scroll which adorns the wall in my room. It has been hanging there since Christmas and I never get tired of looking at it. It is a thing of beauty. All the more so since I it was written especially for me by Lailai's mother as a gift. Using an older style of Chinese calligraphy she wrote Zhang Ji's (张继) famous poem "Night Mooring Near Maple Bridge" (枫桥夜泊). Zhang Ji was a famous Tang dynasty (唐朝)poet and there is a bridge in Suzhou was has been made famous by this poem and while I was in Suzhou last year I did not get a chance during our brief visit to see it. Perhaps next time. In traditional Chinese writing such as that seen here the characters are written with a brush and the words are to be read from top to bottom, starting at the right hand side and progressing left.I have included the text of the poem as it would be written using modern simplified Chinese characters, pinyin and of course and English translation.
Simplified Characters:
张继 Zhang ji
月落乌啼霜满天,
江枫渔火对愁眠。
姑苏城外寒山寺。
夜半钟声到客船。
Pinyin:
Moon sets, crows cry and frost fills all the sky;
By maples and boat lights, I sleepless lie.
Outside
Its ringing bells reach my boat at midnight.
The English does not do the poem justice. It captures what is being said but the feeling is in the sound of the Chinese words. There are other English translations available which might be more literal but I think this one captures the feeling of the poem nicely. Other more liberal translations add too much to the poem and take away from its simplicity and economy of words. The poem is peaceful and tranquil and at the same time possesses a hint of loneliness. All the same I really love this poem and it is one of my first exposures to some of the great works of poetry that China possesses.
If you would like to hear how this poem sounds when spoken in its native language then go to this page: http://kid.baby.sina.com.cn/2004-11-15/4054.html
我要谢来来妈妈,她给了我这张绘画. 谢谢!

You know i think this is the first time i have met someone who loves everything about another culture like i love india. how long did it take you to learn mandarin (is that what its called?). ooh and can you write it?
yeah I am hardcore into what I do and I love it. I am still learning the language and I will be doing that for the rest of my life. I am also learning to write and of course having a wonderful Chinese girlfriend really helps and her mother taught me the basics of using the writing brush to write characters like she does.
Which reminds me I will have to get you to lend me some of that Indian music, I would not mind hearing it.
You have to jump into it with both feet and be motivated. i talk about language learning sometimes on this blog and so maybe you might a few tips there! ;)
Oh My God...that is like one of the most beautiful things I have ever seen...(the first is Sid Vicious...hes my pic on bebo!!) Well that comes close 2nd!!! I LOVE it...and I am jealous of you for having something so goddamn gorgeous in your bedroom...(That sounds weird!!)Well anyway i LOVE it!!!!!!! I wanna learn Mandarin soooo much...especially coz its the most spoken language in the world...but also to be able to read that the way it should be!
Learning mandarin is a great challenge, but like everything that is challenging it is very rewarding to invest yourself in it. I fyou really want to learn it I can point you in the right direction. Go to www.chinesepod.com. The link is also on the main page of the blog! If you have any questions then you know where to find me! ;)
ok i will give you a cd of indian music...but be careful, it will become one of you most prized possessions! actually mandarin's cool, anytime am bored i always go to the chinese channel and just listen to them speak, it always makes me smile, the sound so happy and chirpy!
WHAT? you have a Chinese channel? Is it CCTV? I want one to! WAAAAAAAAHHHHHHHHHHHH
You are so lucky.
I am looking forward to hearing that CD. If you are interested I have some traditional Chinese music CDs here that I could give you a copy of. Let me know if you are interested.
Oh no its called PCNE Chinese. its just beside the indian channel so i flick through it some times. ooh traditional chinese music, definitely!! (would i be able to get the lyrics on the internet?) and i'll give you the cd as soon as i can put it on a cd, they are all on my computer.
On CD I have mostly instrumental stuff but I have loads of MP3 music in Mandarin and the lyrics should be easy enough to find online for some of them. For others you will need to be able to read Chinese characters. Learn some and you can have good fun in the karaoke bars in Beijing. We went a few times and I sang the English songs. Great fun! But I am a terrible singer! hehe
LOL! oh please tell me there's a video of you at the karaoke bar! oh classic!
As a matter of fact there are several videos of me in China doing that, however you my dear lady are never ever ever going to see them! hehehehe
It is cool because you get your own private room and waiter and all the free food you want and drinks, except for alcohol. You have to pay for that! Great fun though!
Seriously? they just give you free food like that? in china? you just go to a karaoke bar and you get free food? China rocks!
Well u pay to rent the room for so many hours and you have your own personal bathroom which believe me is nice in China and u have a button to call a waiter! So in that way the food is probably included in the price but usually u can eat as much as you want. When u are there food is everything! eat eat eat eat. So much to try. I love it!
wow, its like God knew exactly what i wanted in a country and decided to call that country china!!
Isn't it the truth, soon I will call it home! Then I will post hundreds of pics here and show u all the nice food! I have 8GB of photos from my last trip there! All hail the Red China
Hail Japan.....come on guys...Japan rocks..China does too..but I LOVE Japan!
Been there too and I have tons of pics and videos of Japan. For example I have a video as I cross one of those busy intersections in the middle of Tokyo with all those people. In that way I have captured all the sights and sounds of when I was there. Great trip and I plan to go back in the future!
I hate you!! That is so not fair...you get to go touring the world to all those places I really want to go, video them whil I am stuck here...lovely
